Come Play With Me! Piano Project Launches

at  Deer Lake Regional Airport

            For Monday, August 10, 2015

Come Play With Me, a project initiated by Business and Arts NL to install pianos in public spaces across the province, will launch it’s second public piano on August 10, 2015 at 11:00 am at Deer Lake Regional Airport.

Gros Morne Summer Music student Noah Hamilton will introduce the piano to its new home by performing a 15 minute musical set starting at 11am.The gently used and well-loved piano, donated by Corner Brook Residents Charlotte and Kent Jones, was decorated by Corner Brook artist Jackie Alcock who imagined an Underwater Theme for the piano and brought it to life using a combination of paint and woodwork at the Rotary Arts Center.

This piano will provide an opportunity for locals and visitors to express their musical talent and share it with bystanders as they pass through Deer Lake Airport. Street pianos are part of a larger movement that’s grown in popularity over the last number of years, with over 1300 pianos on display worldwide.

Business and Arts NL launched its first piano in St. John’s International Airport last December and it’s been hugely successful.

Musicians have been finding creative ways to harness some of the magic of this piano. Fairgale, a newly formed band based out of St. John’s, recently posted a Youtube video of the band performing an unplugged version of a classic Trooper song. The video has received nearly 5,000 views, and landed the band a spot opening for Trooper at this year’s George Street Festival.

Humber Motors has proudly sponsored the Deer Lake project. “We look forward to seeing family, friends, visitors and tourists get joy and happiness from the piano,” says Joe Antle, General Manager of Humber Motors Ford. “This is an amazing way to spotlight the talent of a Newfoundland Artist and highlight the amazing things that can happen when business and arts communities help each other.”

If you would like to become involved with a piano project, or have a piano that you would like to donate, please contact Business and Arts NL.
