About Explore Art NL
Explore Art NL is an app and interactive map that features over 100 works of public artwork, including murals, sculptures, and other outdoor works across Newfoundland and Labrador. Each work of art is represented with a photo, a short description of the work, an artist bio and contact information, and links to supplemental resources where available. The works are searchable using the map, as well as by keyword, artist, medium, and name, providing users with the tools to seek out public art in a given region or identify a work they see in their travels. You can learn more about this app here on our website.
The first 100 works included in the app were curated by Po Chun Lau. The majority of these were commissioned by government, and many memorialize people and events. We hope to build and maintain a fairly comprehensive database of works, and are particularly interested in widening the scope to include other kinds of public art, including folk art and community-oriented projects. To this end, we have a form for people to submit additional works to be included through the app.
Call for Selection Committee Members
We are seeking visual artists, curators, art writers, and academics to join us as part of a selection committee, alongside Business and Arts staff and board members, to:
- Review submitted works for inclusion (there are currently 42)
- Discuss which works are eligible according to the given criteria
- Share your thoughts about how we can continue to build this project to reflect the breadth and depth of public art across the province, drive engagement with public art, and foster learning and respect for diverse artistic practices.
Business and Arts NL is committed to paying artist fees in accordance with CARFAC’s guidelines. Committee members will be paid $322 for a half-day’s consultation, including reviewing the applications in advance and a 90 minute meeting.
