Business & Arts NL is pleased to host an Income Tax for Freelance Artists workshop with Joe Cardoulis, Manager, Tax Services at Grant Thornton LLP. Whether you’re a practicing artist or just starting out, the goal of this workshop is to help you file your own taxes. In broad strokes, this session will focus on how CRA typically deals with people working in the arts, how to calculate income, how to calculate tax and strategies for paying tax owed.
Specifically, we will look at how to calculate income originating from a variety of sources such as sales and commissions, honorariums and awards, grants, payroll, and personal investments. We will examine how to calculate tax generated from income originating from within Newfoundland as well as outside of the province. Learn how to distinguish between eligible from ineligible expenses, and identify deductions (spouse, dependents, etc) which may be applicable to you. This workshop will conclude with an overview of free DIY tax filing tools, strategies for organizing your records, and an opportunity to ask specific questions.
