Understanding & Negotiating Artist Contracts

Understanding and Negotiating Artist Contracts is a practical 90-minute online workshop designed to help artists confidently navigate the legal agreements they encounter in their careers. Led by Alayna Kolodziechuk from the initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, the session breaks down key contract terms, common pitfalls, and negotiation strategies in clear, accessible language. The materials have been developed specifically for our members, with real-world examples relevant to creative professionals.

This free workshop will equip participants with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions and protect their rights.

This workshop will be presented online via Microsoft Teams.

This workshop will be presented by initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic Director, Alayna Kolodziechuk (they/them) and members of the clinic team. Alayna has more than ten years' experience as a lawyer working with artists in a range of industries to support their legal needs. Alayna also draws on their experience as a member of the board of directors for several notable arts organizations and was the prior Vice-Chair of the Artists Legal Information Society.
