Funding Operations Toolkit & Strategic Planning for Fundraising Success: Q&A with Edie Newton of Children’s Wish Foundation
No matter what project you’re working on, it’s always handy to have your toolkit close by, filled with all of the necessary items you need to get the job done. The same applies to fundraising. But do you have the right items in your toolkit, and are you using them to the best of their ability? And once you have the proper tools in place, do you have a plan to ensure the success of your fundraising campaign?
Edie Newton, Provincial Director of the Children’s Wish Foundation (Newfoundland & Labrador Chapter), has learned much since joining the organization over a decade ago - lessons which she will share during two separate workshops on March 13 (“Funding Operations Toolkit” and “Strategic Planning for Fundraising Success”).
Edie recently took some time to chat about the nuts and bolts of fundraising success.
Business & Arts NL: Fundraising, especially for those who are new to it, may leave some people feeling overwhelmed. There are so many bits and pieces to consider, and each one is important. For those who are preparing to dive into their own campaigns, is there any advice you can offer to help them get off to a smooth start?
Edie Newton: Are you prepared? Are your patrons prepared? Have you surveyed your supporters? Test the waters before you dive!
Business & Arts NL: What, in your opinion, are some “toolkit necessities” that fundraisers should never be without?
EN: A SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) Plan is an absolute must and the resources to execute on the plan.
Business & Arts NL: What factors must an organization (especially an arts organization) consider to determine what kind of fundraising development plan may work for them?
EN: What kind of arts organization are you and what kind of fundraising can you do that will speak to your mission (tell your story) while raising funds – blend the art form with the call to action.
Business & Arts NL: What has been one of the most valuable lessons about fundraising that you’ve learned from your years of experience?
EN: I have learned that you need to be authentic, open-minded, kind and have a great sense of humour. You never know where these attributes will lead you!
