Spotlight on TD Music Corner at Daffodil Place

Have you ever experienced physical or emotional stress, and then put on your favourite tune and instantly felt a bit better? The healing power of music is indeed one of its most magical qualities. Music is our friend throughout life’s highs and lows, and can calm, soothe and inspire us in a way that nothing else can.

Now, thanks to a new partnership between TD Bank Group, the Newfoundland and Labrador Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, Wreckhouse Jazz & Blues (WJB), and the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Arts Society (NLFAS), guests of Daffodil Place will get to experience more music during their stay.

TD Music Corner will see local blues, jazz and folk musicians perform for guests of Daffodil Place - a 24-room facility that offers a home away from home for people with cancer, and their caregivers, who must travel to St. John's for treatments. The partnership is made possible by a $5,000 contribution from TD, which has been supporting the creation and performance of music across Canada since 2003.

“TD Bank Group is thrilled to partner with these amazing community organizations and provide financial support to bring music to the halls of Daffodil Place,” says Cory Basha, District Vice President of TD Commercial Baking.

“Our hope is that introducing music into the building will alleviate some of the emotional, physical and social stresses caused by cancer, and boost the mood and help those going through cancer treatment and recovery. TD Music Corner is one of many ways we proudly support the community.”

The performances will take place on the first Monday or Tuesday of each month until December and will be coordinated by representatives from both music organizations. The partnership marks the first time that WJB and NLFAS have worked together on an initiative in the community.

“We see this as a great opportunity to improve the well-being of Daffodil Place residents through music therapy. We are extremely grateful for TD Bank Group’s financial support, which is making it possible for young musicians from throughout the region to play for those dealing with serious health issues. It will undoubtedly be a unique experience, and we are confident it will have a positive impact on everyone involved.”

Matthew Piercey, Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society-NL, says the initiative will be an important part of the programs offered to guests at Daffodil Place.
