Spotlight on the Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant

There comes a time in every artist’s career when they reach that critical point - they’ve created a body of work, along with some buzz, but they need some help to reach the next level. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant is giving visual artists that extra support.

Established in 2014, the annual grant is valued at $5,000 and provides support “for a project and/or activities that will significantly advance an artist’s career, help evolve their practice and/or develop the artist’s reputation and visibility within the art world.” The result of a partnership between Cox & Palmer and Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL-CARFAC), it’s an expansion of Cox & Palmer’s “BRAVO! - Supporting the Arts” program, which has been providing financial, in-kind and promotional support to artists and arts organizations since 2011.

So far, the Cox & Palmer Pivotal Point Grant has been awarded to visual artists Joe Fowler, Kay Burns and Audrey Hurd, with a fourth to be awarded this fall.

"We love being able to contribute to visual artists in such a direct and meaningful manner,” says Paul McDonald, Partner at Cox & Palmer.

"Newfoundland and Labrador is deeply steeped in arts and culture. We’re quite proud to live and work here. Our goal is to showcase the remarkable music, visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts in this province, and to promote the arts community as a vibrant and vital part of our economy. A community with a vibrant arts sector is also a great community in which to work!”

Cox & Palmer’s arts support extends beyond VANL-CARFAC and the visual arts, with the firm also supporting Opera on the Avalon, Resource Centre for the Arts, Qalipu Cultural Foundation, SPARKS Literary Festival, Wreckhouse Jazz & Blues, St. Michael’s Printshop, ArtsNL, Shallaway, and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra.

"We have developed partnerships with over a dozen arts organizations that shape, share and celebrate who we are as a province and as a people,” McDonald says.

"We are tremendously proud to be a long-standing champion of the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador and are committed to continuing these relationships."
