Spotlight on the Business Workshops for Artists Series
The new year is in full swing and with it comes the promise of potential - to learn new skills, gain knowledge, and put into motion plans to achieve personal and professional goals. Whether you’re an artist who's just starting out or have been nurturing your craft and business for years, there’s always something new to learn to help grow your practice.
With that in mind, Business & Arts NL is pleased to announce three upcoming sessions as part of our Business Workshops for Artists series. The series aims to help evolve arts businesses by offering a variety of workshops covering everything from fundraising, grant writing and tax tips, to strategic planning and intellectual property law, just to name a few.
Income Tax for Freelance Artists
The 2020 winter series kicks off on January 22 with “Income Tax for Freelance Artists” led by Joe Cardoulis of Grant Thornton LLP. This session aims to equip artists with helpful information and tips so that they can file their own taxes with confidence. The workshop will look at how CRA typically deals with those working in the arts, and will give participants tips on how to organize their records, as well as direction on how to calculate income from a range of sources, how to distinguish between eligible and ineligible expenses, and more. Grant Writing for Individual Artists & Arts Organizations
A successful grant application can mean the difference between pushing a project ahead, or putting it on the back burner for an undetermined period of time. If you’re an artist, you’ve likely had to fill out one of two (or many) of these during your career. But not all applications are the same and it takes time, and patience, to get to know the process. On February 19, Katrina Rice of ArtsNL will host a grant writing workshop focussed on ArtsNL's Professional Project Grants Program (in anticipation of the March 15 submission deadline). The session will look at what makes a successful application and will offer valuable insight into how to access ArtsNL funding, best practices for writing a project proposal and more. Maintaining Respectful Workplaces
The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) is working to make respectful workplaces the norm in the cultural sector by addressing harassment in arts workplaces. On March 24, Jenn Deon of Jenn Deon Consulting Inc. (and producing artistic director of PerSIStence Theatre Company) will lead CHRC’s “Maintaining Respectful Workplaces” workshop under the Respectful Workplaces in the Arts (RWA) banner. Through thoughtful discussion, tools and tips, and a review of situations and scenarios, this session aims to help employers, artists and cultural workers create and maintain a respectful workplace. All sessions will take place at the Emera Innovation Exchange at Signal Hill Campus and cost $10 for Business & Arts NL members and $25 for non-members (registration fee includes an annual membership to Business & Arts NL).
