Spotlight on GivingTuesday
Today is GivingTuesday, a time in which we take pause to reflect on the ways in which we can give back to our communities - helping make the world a better place, one small action at a time.
In Canada, the GivingTuesday movement began in 2013 (initiated by CanadaHelps, GIV3 and several other founding partners) and is now one of 80+ countries working to inspire generosity globally year-round. Last year’s GivingTuesday campaign in Canada included 47 local community movements and saw $43.6 million donated online, among countless other acts of kindness and generosity.
There are many worthy causes to which you can donate money and/or time, and every action counts, no matter the size. You might be wondering how you can contribute to this year’s GivingTuesday campaign. If you enjoy live music and performance or any aspect of the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador, there are many wonderful local organizations out there who can use your support.
The past couple of years have been difficult to navigate for many organizations, including those in our creative community. But many have ridden the wave by making some innovative pivots and through it all, they've revealed their resilience and ingenuity time and time again, while making great art that’s helped soothe, inspire, uplift and motivate.
If you’d like to support the arts community in this province and the work they produce, here are some of our members who have active campaigns to which you can contribute.
Kittiwake Dance Theatre
Kittiwake Dance Theatre is Newfoundland and Labrador’s professional dance performance company.
As we continue to navigate the impacts of COVID, Kittiwake Dance Theatre remains dedicated to creating exciting dance experiences for audiences throughout our province.
Our 2022 island-wide tour of The Nutcracker ballet kicks off on November 29. In January 2023, we are delighted to collaborate with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra for presentation of new choreography by our 2022 RBC-Kittiwake Emerging Choreographer-in-Residence, followed by the premiere of our newest story ballet, Narnia, in April 2023. Kittiwake graciously accepts any support to help us bring these creative opportunities to fruition (click here).

RCA/LSPU Hall
Resource Centre for the Arts (RCA) was created in 1979 as an artist-run, community-based organization that fosters the development and showcasing of Newfoundland and Labrador art and artists. It operates from the historic LSPU Hall (formerly the Longshoremen’s Protective Union), affectionately referred to as The Hall.
Donating to the LSPU Hall and RCA means directly supporting essential, live performance in your community. You can donate directly as a one-time donation, become a monthly donor, purchase a seat from our Seat Campaign, or donate to our Endowment Fund.
However you choose to donate, it will go towards important programs and resources for the artists who create the art that is the backbone of this community (click here).

Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra
Established as an amateur ensemble in 1962 and incorporated in 1979, the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (NSO) contributes to the overall quality of life in Newfoundland and Labrador by fostering the live performance of orchestral music.
On GivingTuesday, the orchestra is looking for YOUR help. As we celebrate 60 years, we have launched our "60 For The 60th Campaign" – an effort to find 60 donors who will support the NSO with a donation of $1,000 or more (or give at any level you are able to support our 2022-23 campaign). This support will be directed to our "NSO Everywhere" outreach program, which offers our concerts free of charge to seniors homes and through health service organizations across the entire province.
Think back to how the NSO has been a part of your life – a special concert, a school trip or presentation, or maybe this is just a great time to give back to support the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador as we work to move beyond the pandemic. Make this the year you support the province’s only professional not-for-profit symphony orchestra.

Neighbourhood Dance Works
It’s the 41st year of Neighbourhood Dance Works (NDW) and what a fantastic year of programming it’s been! From touring artists to the 31st Festival of New Dance and year-round community engagement, it has been incredible and it’s all thanks to your support.
At NDW we strive to support artists here in Newfoundland and Labrador and across the country while developing audiences within our community. With your help we are able to reach and exceed our artistic goals.
Coming up this year we are proud to present a cross-provincial Ballet Tour along with the ACC, Ballet Kelowna, and Kittiwake Dance Theatre, bringing stunning contemporary ballet to seven locations from May 12th to June 1st, 2023!

Association for the Arts in Mount Pearl
Since 2005, the Association for the Arts in Mount Pearl (AAMP) has been encouraging people to explore their creativity and have fun with the arts. We offer year-round programming that ranges from festivals and performances to workshops and activities for kids.
Our activities are largely funded by grants from ArtsNL, the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program, as well as annual operating funds from the City of Mount Pearl and we want to keep our events economically accessible to everyone. That means that we provide as much free programming as possible and rarely charge admission for events.
However, if you enjoy our programming and/or support our mission to help everyone explore their creativity and you can afford to provide monetary support, we are also absolutely delighted to receive donations towards future activities.
Your donations help us to expand our events beyond the basics, they allow us to include more people in each event, and they help our funders clearly see that we have the support of our community.
