Spotlight on Explore Art NL

Whether it's a visit to an art gallery, taking in a concert, enjoying a good book, or admiring a neighbourhood mural on your daily walk, we know that engaging with the arts can boost our mental and emotional well-being and promote social connection. (Check out this report from the World Health Organization to learn more about the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, or click here to read this literature review from the American Journal of Public Health that explores the relationship between engagement with the creative arts and health outcomes. In this recent article, Canadian charity STEPS Public Arts looks at five ways that public art promotes public health.)

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we acknowledge the many benefits that engaging with the arts brings - and that includes visual art.

This mural by artist Ginok Song is located on the Petty Harbour town building, and it’s just one of the works of public art you can explore on the Explore Art NL app.

Our free Explore Art NL mobile and online app is just one easy, convenient way for you to enjoy outdoor, public art all across the province. Whether it's a large mural in downtown St. John's or a sculpture or memorial nestled in a small community, Explore Art NL makes tracking down local art a breeze, allowing users to browse works by location, medium or artist. Featuring over 100 pieces, it's an interactive way to dive in and discover the artistic and creative richness of the province, from the palm of your hand.

Beyond simply mapping artworks, Explore Art NL serves as a digital gallery, spotlighting the diversity and talent of artists working in the province. Whether you're planning a road trip or looking to explore your own backyard in a new light, the app provides a curated and ever-growing guide to the cultural landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We’re excited about the potential for this app to showcase works of art in surprising places, to shine the spotlight on some incredible artists, and get people out exploring our beautiful province,” said Amy Henderson, Executive Director of Business & Arts NL, at the time of the app's launch.

But Explore Art NL isn’t just for viewers — it’s also a growing showcase for artists. This spring, we're expanding the Explore Art NL app with fresh outdoor artworks. Have you created a piece of public art, or are you a public art enthusiast who knows of a piece that should be featured? Submit your recommendations by Friday, May 30, 2025 (click here to access the Explore Art NL Artwork Submission Form and click here to read the eligibility and photo requirements).

Artists working in all forms of public art — murals, sculptures, installations, etc. — are encouraged to submit their work. Be part of a public art movement that brings beauty, meaning and wellness to us all!
