Spotlight on Financial Literacy Month & Business Workshops for Artists: Budgeting & Financial Planning for Self-Employed Artists

Wellbeing is an important area of focus for many folks these days. And while our mental, physical, emotional and social wellbeing all play an important role in our overall happiness and how satisfied we are with our lives, the aspect of financial wellbeing sometimes gets overlooked.

When it comes to finances, knowledge is power, and knowing how to manage debt, balance a budget, and maintain accurate records of your household finances so that things don't take you by surprise are just a few key things to help you minimize stress and get on the right financial footing.

But while talking about money and finances is often seen as taboo, there's no better way to boost your financial confidence and work towards a healthy financial future. That's why this year, the theme of Financial Literacy Month is “Money on your Mind. Talk about it!”

Led by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), Financial Literacy Month is a national campaign, now in its 14th year, that works to strengthen and build the financial literacy and resilience of Canadians. (Click here to see the FCAC’s latest survey results on Canadians' financial well-being.)

According to the FCAC, while many have difficulty discussing financial concerns with family and friends, "Research shows that talking about money builds financial confidence, and can lead to better financial outcomes. This is especially true for women." (Click here to check out some free tools and resources from the FCAC to help you manage money confidently, including a budget planner, financial goal calculator and more.) This year's theme is an effort to destigmatize those conversations and help Canadians become more comfortable with talking about money matters.

To that end, Business & Arts NL is also making efforts to boost financial literacy and continue the conversation with the latest offering in our Business Workshops for Artists series.

On November 13, we're pleased to welcome back James Lanning and Jennifer Collins of Keen (a local financial services company that helps entrepreneurs and organizations manage and grow their businesses), who will host the workshop "Budgeting and Financial Planning for Self-Employed Artists."

The session, which aims to help self-employed artists achieve financial stability and success, will cover an introduction to budgeting (including how to budget for specific projects and develop a monthly and annual budget), debt management, cash flow, saving for unexpected costs and more. The online session is free to attend and all are welcome. (Click here to register for "Budgeting and Financial Planning for Self-Employed Artists.")

This latest session is part of our Financial Literacy workshop series and is supported by TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment.

"Supporting financial literacy initiatives is one way TD is focused on demonstrating our commitment to making a positive impact within the communities where we live and work," says Marieke Vandekolk, Manager, Philanthropy, Sustainability & Corporate Citizenship, TD Bank Group.

"As we recognize Financial Literacy Month, TD is proud to support community organizations, like Business & Arts NL, and its financial literacy workshop series that provides local artists with foundational resources and tools to help support financial well-being."

We hope you'll join us for our November 13th workshop to pick up some tips to help you lay the foundation for a secure and stable financial future!
