IP (for Artists) Demystified
Copyright, trademarks, patents, trade secrets... what does it all mean in the context of an artist's work and overall practice? What about exclusivity, approval rights, and ownership versus licensing?
This is an interactive session designed for and about artists specifically where we will provide and work through IP Tools for Artists that have been created for Business & Arts Newfoundland and Labrador members. Take matters into your own hands as we work together to demystify common IP practices in the art world. The objective is for you to be better prepared for the ongoing management of your legal rights and relationships.
This workshop is the second in a series of three, a collaboration with initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic at Dalhousie University, supported by the Law Foundation of NL. This series will also include:
Artists’ Legal Self-Defense 101 - Oct 22nd, 2025
Understanding and Negotiating Artist Contracts - February 25th, 2026
This workshop series will be followed by a Legal Clinic for participants, who will have the opportunity to speak with lawyers and law students from initio to discuss individual questions.
The workshop series will be presented by initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic Director, Alayna Kolodziechuk (they/them) and members of the clinic team. Alayna has more than ten years' experience as a lawyer working with artists in a range of industries to support their legal needs. Alayna also draws on their experience as a member of the board of directors for several notable arts organizations and was the prior Vice-Chair of the Artists Legal Information Society.
Thank you to the Law Foundation of NL for your support.
