Call for Submissions – Mural Artists Town of Hopedale

Deadline to Submit: November 15, 2024

Project Description: 

This project is for any local artist(s) interested in painting a mural for our town using the theme Them Days, or something along those lines. The Community Centre is used by all groups and ages, for community feasts etc., and we want to create a mural that will express our culture in diverse ways. The mural will be created inside the Nanuk Community Centre on a fibre resin wall. Artists may paint directly on the wall or propose a digital design that can be printed on vinyl. The total size of the available wall is 70 feet 6 inches. The artist will not be expected to use the whole wall – please share what area of the wall you will use in your submission. Upon completion, the artist will be invited to participate in an unveiling, where they can talk about their vision for the mural and what it depicts.

Who Can Apply

  • Artists of all levels of experience (emerging through established) are welcome to apply.

  • We welcome submissions in a variety of media (i.e. concepts to be painted by hand, photo/digital artworks).

  • Applicants must reside in Hopedale

  • Experience in or an openness to community-engaged visual arts practice is preferred

Compensation:  

The selected artist will be paid artist fees of up to $10,000 including HST (if applicable) for all design and creation, materials, safety equipment, assistant artists, safety training, taxes and insurance, which need to be outlined in the budget template provided below.

The Paint Shop will also provide up to $300 worth of paints for this project.

Selection Process:

The Hopedale Inuit Community Government staff and councillors will decide on who will be selected.

Evaluation:

Eligible submissions will be evaluated based on the:

  • Relevance of the proposed project to the program theme and clarity of ideas

  • Feasibility and scope of the project plan that demonstrates your capacity to undertake the proposed project

  • Impact, the potential of the project to contribute to and advance your artistic practice and/or professional development

  • Budget a reasonable budget that fairly compensates the artist and collaborators and that aligns with the proposed project (please use the template provided)

Timeline:

  • Submission deadline: November 15, 2024.

  • The successful candidate will be contacted by December 1, 2024.

  • Mural painting to take place between January 2 and February 28, 2025.

Call for Submissions – Mural Artists “Recreation for All”

Deadline to Submit: October 18, 2024

Project Description: 

The Town of Pasadena is inviting submissions from artists interested in painting a mural in the main entrance of Pasadena Place, our community centre. The aim of this mural is to visually communicate that the recreation center is a welcoming space for everyone, embracing diversity in age, ability, background, and interests. By showcasing a variety of activities and representations, the mural will foster a sense of belonging and encourage community engagement.

The wall space for the mural (see image below) is 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide, and is painted drywall which will need to be primed by the artist. The selected artist could choose to fill the entire space but is not required to; please make clear the format/size you would plan to use in your submission.

We are seeking proposals from artists interested in creating a mural that reflects the following elements:

Diverse Activities Depicted

  • Sports: Show a variety of sports such as basketball, soccer, pickleball, tennis, volleyball, and baseball.

  • Arts and Crafts: Include painting, quilting, knitting, and other creative activities.

  • Fitness and Wellness: Depict activities like yoga, aerobics, line dancing, and intergenerational events.

  • Community Events: Illustrate events such as dance classes, cultural festivals, heritage workshops and community meetings.

  • Outdoor Activities: Show hiking, biking, picnicking, bus tours, and gardening to emphasize connection with nature.

Representation of Different Age Groups

  • Children: Playing on a playground, learning to swim, or participating in a craft class.

  • Teens: Engaged in team sports, skateboarding, or attending Friday Night Youth.

  • Adults: Working out in the gym, taking a yoga class, or playing pickleball.

  • Seniors: Participating in gentle exercise classes, gardening, or line dancing.

Inclusivity in Abilities

  • Include individuals with disabilities participating in various activities, such as a person in a wheelchair playing basketball, someone with a guide dog jogging, and youth participants with their worker.

Cultural Diversity

  • Depict people from different cultural backgrounds enjoying recreational activities together to reflect the diversity of the community.

Community Background

In 2016 we opened Pasadena Place, a state-of-the-art community centre. Pasadena Place is a multi-sport and fitness complex designed for residents of Pasadena and surrounding areas to assist in providing a healthy lifestyle. Pasadena Place is surrounded by numerous outdoor recreation facilities including a soccer field, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball courts, softball/baseball fields, a playground, walking trails, splash pad and an age-friendly mud kitchen and sensory garden. A paved walkway around our building and the connecting paths to all these facilities make it the most-used facility in the community. The addition of a mural depicting all the activities centered around our facility will surely make our place, Pasadena Place, the envy of many other communities within the province.


Compensation:  

The selected artist will be paid artist fees of up to $10,000 including HST (if applicable) for all design and creation. Materials, safety equipment, assistant artists, safety training, taxes and insurance, etc. need to be included in the artist fees outlined in the budget. 

Additional fees for travel expenses for an artist not living within the community will be provided. 

The Paint Shop will also provide up to $300 worth of paints for this project.

Who Can Apply

  • Preference may be given to artists residing in Newfoundland and Labrador, and travel expenses will only be provided to artists living within the province, but outside of the community. (See budget template for more information about travel expenses). 

  • Artists of all levels of experience, from emerging to established, are welcome to apply. 

  • As this mural will be painted while the facility is in use by the community, please submit a plan that includes only non-aerosolized and low-VOC products.  

Timeline:

  • Submission deadline: October 18, 2024.

  • Mural painting to take place between Janruary 8 - 31.

Call for Mural Artists – Trinity Bay North

Deadline Extended: October 31, 2024

Project Description: 

With support through Year of the Arts and the “Our Creative Home” initiative, the municipality of Trinity Bay North (TBN) will be inviting up to four artists to create four 4’ x 6.5’ murals (one for each community) to be installed in the Frank Power Chalet in Port Union. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the municipality, the theme of the mural will relate to “Unity Through Uniqueness” to celebrate the four communities of Melrose, Port Union, Catalina, and Little Catalina, coming together to form what is now the municipality of Trinity Bay North. The murals will engage and focus on the rich history, heritage and community present in each of the communities to celebrate the diverse arts and culture that has been cultivated over the last twenty years of formation. 

As part of the process, Trinity Bay North will be hosting an open Town Hall with the selected artist(s) to discuss their plan and any concerns residents may have about how their community is being represented. The format and structure of this Town Hall will be developed in consultation with the artist(s).


Location

Note: The cork board on the wall will be removed to not obstruct the mural. 

The size of the wall is 9’ (floor to ceiling) x 18’ (door to wall). 4’ x 6’ Panels must be done in portrait to fit the space. If you have alternative measurements for the panels please include this in your proposal. Note that the height of the panels combined should not exceed 7’ to accommodate the heater and the air pump.

Community Background

Applicants are welcome to use the following resources from the Trinity Bay North Historical Society when creating their vision for the proposed mural.

Compensation:  

The total budget for artist fees for this project is $10,000 (including HST) for all design and creation. Additional fees for artists not living in the community (travel, accommodations, and a per diem for up to one week) will be provided if necessary. Please see the budget template for more details. The Paint Shop will provide up to $300 worth of paints for this project and the Municipality of Trinity Bay North will provide an additional $500 for mural supplies such as panels, boards, framing materials, etc.

For artists who apply as a group or a collective please include how the fee will be split among you in your draft budget.

Who Can Apply

Artists from across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador are welcome to apply, however, artists who currently reside in Trinity Bay North or the surrounding areas on the Bonavista Peninsula will be prioritized. Artists can work in any medium (painters, photographers, printmakers, textile artists, etc) so long as the work can be mounted onto the 4’ x 6’ panels.

Experience in and/or openness to community-engaged visual arts practice is preferred but not necessary.

Timeline:

  • The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2024. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. 

  • The selected artist(s) must start the mural no later than December 1st, 2024, and have it completed before March 31, 2025.

Call for Mural Artists – For The Town of Englee

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, September 20, 2024

Project Description: 

The Town of Englee is commissioning a mural project to be installed at our community Playground in the heart of our town. The mural will be created offsite on five 4-ft Dibond sheets that will be installed together to form one large artwork. It will be affixed and bordering the playground.

We want to engage an artist who will create imagery that demonstrates and celebrates the natural beauty and historic stories of our rural fishing community. The Mural could feature a story of our history, our once famous salt fish plant and salmon operation (salmon that was Served to the Queen herself), our many old historic buildings, some that were floated here in relocation times from various surrounding communities and/or our rich fishing heritage, beautiful walking trails, and gorgeous scenery. We are known as one of the closest points to the 1914 sealing disaster. We want to radiate that warm feeling of home that people get when they spend any amount of time here. We want to capture the magic that is rural Newfoundland and show people that there is no place like home!

Location

The mural will be mounted on the North facing section of our playground fence that is located at the centre of our beautiful town adjacent to a crossroads where all visitors entering town will be passing by. Surrounding our playground are three of our five churches, our Post Office, our boat launch and both of our local stores so basically it is one of the busiest places in our community.

Community Background

Englee is a town on the east side of the Great Northern Peninsula in a sheltered harbour on the northern headland of Canada Bay. In the early 1800s, four families inhabited the area, however, most settlers came between 1870 and 1900. The French were active in fishing operations in the 1860s and 1870s. The first settlers were fishermen, builders and trappers. Like many other outports of the time, each family grew its own vegetables and raised its own sheep and cattle.

In the late 1880s, the first fishing establishment was built and operated by Baxter Crocker, and it was still operating in 1980 as John Reeves Limited. In 1940 Canada Bay Cold Storage Company Limited began a fresh-frozen codfish and fresh salmon operation. The first school was built in 1900 and had an enrolment of 25. In 1978-79 the school had an enrolment of 305.

We still to this day remain a fishing community. We have many fishers that take in the inshore fishery. We are a community that takes pride in our heritage. We have five walking trails, each with unique views.

Materials, priming and preparation, and final clear-coating of the Dibond surfaces, (aside from a contribution of $300 worth of paints from the Paint Shop for painted murals), safety equipment, assistant artists, safety training, taxes and insurance, will be included in the artist fees, and need to be outlined in the budget. Additional fees for travel expenses for an artist not living within the community will be provided.

  • Experienced Artists with 2-3 previous works would be an asset but not required.

  • Emerging and experienced artists and photo/digital artists are welcome to apply

  • Experience in and/or an openness to community-engaged visual arts practice is preferred

  • The artist will be required to work with paints and or printed materials that are weatherproof and will stand up to our seasonal Newfoundland weather

Eligible submissions will be evaluated based on the:

Call for Mural Artists – For The Town of Burnt Islands

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, September 13th, 2024

Project Description: 

The Town of Burnt Islands is seeking to commission an artist(s) to paint a mural on the Hook and Line Interpretation Center.

Location

The Hook and Line Interpretation Center holds a café, an area to display local art, and a museum displaying artifacts.  Downstairs from the center is a local bait depot. The size of the mural will be ten feet long and eight feet tall on a primed gyprock wall.

Theme  

  • The Mural is to represent our Community's Fishing Culture. The artwork will tell the story of the art of fishing and the multiple cultural techniques passed on to those who continue the art of fishing.

  • In 2022 storm Fiona devastated parts of our coast, and the aftermath left our community battered and bruised. The building that included our Cultural Museum, the Hook and Line Interpretation Center, was damaged and required extensive repairs. The local Economic Development Board is in the process of managing the rebuild. This project is an opportunity to remind our community of its history of fortitude when facing any storm by featuring art that tells the story of the strength and fortitude of those who fish.

Artist Fees:  

  • $10,000 for all design and creation, including taxes if applicable.  

  • Materials to be supplied by Artists.

  • The Paint Shop will provide up to $300 worth of paints for this project. 

  • Additional funding is available for travel for Artists living more than 50 km away from the project site.

  • A budget template is provided (see below).

  • Individual artists or teams of artists are welcome to apply. Teams should indicate how the $10,000 fee will be split among teammates in the budget.

Did You Know?

Our Holiday Gift Guide is used year-round (like by members of the business community, seeking products from local artists for gift ideas, swag bag items, etc.). If you sell items that are of a lower price point, that can be reproduced in larger quantities, it’s a great idea to submit those too!

Artists may submit three different items they’d like to have featured in the guide (we recommend choosing ones that are most likely to draw people to your online store or website).

Please provide the following for each item using our online form:

  1. Product title/name

  2. An image of the product/service

    • Required dimensions: 6” (w) by 6.5” (h) at minimum 72ppi or 517px (w) by 560px (h)

    • Images submitted with different proportions will be cropped to this format, which is roughly square.

    • One item per image.

    • We’ve provided templates sized to the correct dimensions below to help ensure your product images will fit.

    • Max image size is 4MB. Accepted formats include JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF.

  3. Price (or price range) for each product

  4. A link to the specific product page on your site

Call for Artists – Outdoor Mural For The Town of Gaultois

Deadline to apply: September 20, 2024

Project Description: 

The Town of Gaultois is searching for an artist to design and create an exterior mural on the lower half of our Community Centre located in the heart of town. Gaultois is an isolated community in Bay D’Espoir accessible by ferry. It is the last surviving town on Long Island. Several communities situated along the island’s shores: Piccaire, Raymond’s Point, Stone Valley, Round Harbour, Patrick’s Harbour and Harbour le Gallais were all thriving communities at one point but are now either silent or have become cabin sites.

Having survived a relocation vote in 2023, we are interested in considering mural themes of joy, resilience and embracing the town’s isolation as a feature which makes it unique and special. The mural could celebrate our rich history and promising future or its magical elements – the faerie dust sprinkled on our ATV trails that draws visitors to want to buy a house and move here. The crows, gulls, wharf cats, foxes, moose and whales who live parallel lives in the town could also be featured. We are open to all types of designs and styles including fantasy, myth, legend, historical, contemporary & abstract. We are looking for art that can move us emotionally and spark delight in residents and the large number of tourists who visit. 

The Gaultois Community Centre is in the center of town and is the hub of social activities. The lower half of the Community Centre has two highly visible tapered walls (please see pictures below for measurements). The dimensions of the first side are 7’9” x 22’2’’ x 5’2”.  The other side is 7’9” x 60’ x 3’4” This stretch has two windows and a door to be taken into consideration in the final design. The walls are a mixture of concrete and wood and the mural(s) will occupy the lower half of the Community Centre which is currently painted green as seen in the pictures. Submitting artists are invited to propose how much of the available space they envision incorporating into the mural and should indicate in their concept sketch the approximate dimensions and location on the specific walls. 

The town is open to the artist creating the mural out of any material and can either be painted directly on the wall or applied onto Dibond, plywood or some other type of panels. The project can be created on-site inside the Community Centre or off-site and delivered to the town. The town will install panels on the building.

The project includes up to 9 days of residence in Gaultois if the artist chooses to create the mural onsite. If more time onsite is required, we can offer a letter of support to help the artist secure additional travel funding. If the mural is to be painted off-site, the deadline for delivery of the artwork is March 31, 2025.

The town requests the artist share documentation of their process so that the town can share images/videos on their social media as part of the town’s public engagement work related to this project. 

The mural(s) will occupy the lower half of the Community Centre which is currently painted green. These walls are a tapered wedge shape. The dimensions of the mural area on the narrow side of the building are 7’9” x 22’2’’ x 5’2”. 

The dimensions of the mural area on the longer side of the building are 7’9” x 60’ x 3’4”. This stretch has two windows and a door to be taken into consideration in the final design.

 

Compensation:

The maximum budget for the artist is $10,000, which would include all design, creation and materials, shipping, delivery (if applicable) and taxes, if applicable. Additional fees for travel expenses and accommodation for up to 9 days for an artist not living within the community will be provided. For painted works, The Paint Shop will donate up to $300 worth of paints to the project.

 

Submission Requirements:

  • A description (max 500 words) and concept sketch of your proposed mural, indicating which wall(s) you'll use and the approximate dimensions or square footage of the proposed piece

  • A 200-word bio

  • A link to your website or portfolio and your social media presence

  • A budget outlining the artist fee requested and any extra expenditures creation of the mural would incur, such as the help of an assistant and materials. The maximum budget for the artist is $10,000.00 inclusive of HST if applicable. Please note that all accommodation, per diems and gas will be covered separately.

  • A basic work plan outlining key dates and steps. Please also indicate how long you would anticipate being in residence to paint 

  • Up to five images of previous works that can help illustrate the style you have in mind for this project (please indicate the title, date, medium, and dimensions of each work). 

 

Selection Process:

The successful artist will be chosen by a jury who will evaluate the proposed project on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of the proposed project to the themes and the clarity of ideas

  • Feasibility and scope of the project plan that demonstrates your capacity to undertake the proposed project

  • Impact – the potential of the project to contribute to and advance your artistic practice and/or professional development

  • Budget a reasonable budget that fairly compensates the artist and collaborators and that aligns with the proposed project

 

Timeline:

Submission deadline: September 20, 2024

The successful candidate will be contacted by October 1, 2024

On site mural painting will take place no later than March 2025 (dates are flexible)

If the mural is created off site, it must be delivered to the town by March 31, 2025.  

 

Who Can Apply:

  • Preference may be given to artists residing in or connected to NL and travel expenses will only be provided to artists living in NL but outside of the community

  • Preference will be given to artists with outdoor mural painting experience.

  • Emerging and experienced artists are welcome to apply.

(Un)Common Threads Creativity and Innovation Conference

Fall 2024


Business and Arts NL is hosting a creativity and innovation summit at the Sheraton Hotel on  November 7, 2024, that will bring together 250 participants from across the business and arts communities to explore creativity: what it is, how to harness it, and how to apply it to fuel innovation. 

We are seeking artists to create work to be presented as part of this event, including works that can be performed live, or works that are created in advance and displayed at the event. We welcome submissions from artists at all career stages.

Our mission to facilitate meaningful dialogue and purposeful partnerships between the arts and business communities is front and center in the planning of this event. It follows that the involvement and work of artists is an essential element. It is deeply important that artist involvement is not "icing" or merely surface level. By integrating art and performance throughout the summit, we will demonstrate the vital role of art and creativity to inspire, challenge, and connect people, and how businesses can work with artists to create exceptional experiences. For this reason, submissions of works with an interactive component are encouraged. 

 

Theme:

We’re looking for creative works that explore the theme, “(Un)Common Threads”. We use this title for our event series in the creative/innovation space because of the variety of images and connotations it engenders, and the interplay between: 

  • Common, as in what the business and arts have in common - a desire for impact, for evolution and innovation, teams, problems and solutions etc. etc., and a desire to seek uncommon, surprising, unexpected synergies

  • Common, as in plain, widely available, mundane, everyday, etc. When creativity is applied to these common ideas, items, and problems, innovative solutions and viewpoints arise.  

  • Threads in figurative and literal forms - narrative threads, connective tissues, the “ties that bind” etc. 

Artists should feel free to interpret this theme in any way that feels appropriate. 

 

Compensation:

$3,500 - $10,000 per artist, including materials, delivery, installation and takedown, performance fees, licensing fees for photographs of your performance/work, and promotional materials including a short written statement about your work/process, short process videos and photos for social media. Each selected artist will be required to attend the summit on Nov 7, 2024, and to be featured in a Spotlight on Partnerships story about your work and how it ties to this theme. For participating artists from within the province who do not live on the Avalon Peninsula, travel expenses will be provided. 

 

Timelines: 

Deadline to submit an expression of interest: Friday, May 31, 2024

If necessary, shortlisted applicants may be asked to create a second, more detailed application, and will be paid $500 for this work. 

Final selections will be made no later than June 28.

Performances/presentations will take place on Nov 7, 2024. 

Delivery and installation of artworks, props, equipment etc. will take place on the morning of Nov 7, 2024, and be taken down at the end of the same day. 

All selected artists will take part in the summit on Nov 7, 2024. 

 

Submission requirements:

Please submit the following information in a single pdf by email to: info@businessandartsnl.com 

  • A description (max 500 words) of your proposed performance, exhibition, or contribution to the summit, including how you envision participants interacting with it (i.e. watching a performance, stopping by during coffee and lunch breaks to check it out in detail, displaying on screens throughout the space etc. participating in small groups throughout the day, etc.). If you prefer to send this portion of your submission via video, please limit the video length to no longer than 3 minutes.

  • A project budget, including artist fees for yourself and any collaborators, materials, delivery, installation/takedown, a licensing fee for images/short videos of your artwork to be used by Business and Arts NL’s marketing and social media, and a fee for providing marketing materials such as short process videos and photos for social media. If you are travelling from within NL, but outside the Avalon Peninsula, please provide expected travel costs, (according to the federal government’s travel directive). These will be outside of your artist fee. We have provided a budget template which includes possible cost categories and links to useful resources to help you structure your budget.   • A 200-word bio

  • A link to your website or portfolio 

  • Up to five examples (images, links to videos or recordings, etc.) of your work, including similar works, examples that demonstrate your ability to execute the proposed artwork, concept sketches, etc.

 

FAQs:

  • Please submit only one concept per application. If you would like to submit more than one idea, you may do so in a separate package.

  • Please submit your application as a single pdf, with links to video/audio files.

  • This call is open to artists from anywhere, but only artists living within Newfoundland and Labrador and outside of the Avalon Peninsula will have their travel costs to participate in the event covered.

  • The conference team (including Business and Arts staff, board, and advisory committee members) will evaluate/assess the submissions based on the proposed project’s relevance, feasibility, and connection to the stated theme.

  • Existing work is welcome.

  • Our vision for participants’ interaction with art at this event is that it will spark conversations, compel people to circulate throughout the event spaces, help them engage thoughtfully with the themes, and be surprised. We do not want artworks and performances to be in the background during networking opportunities, but will rather serve as examples of creativity and innovation themselves, and provide experiences that participants feel a part of. 

    Interactivity is not a requirement, but would be very welcome. Examples of interactivity might include:

    Opportunities to interact in a passive/gentle way (for instance, using your phone)

    Reactive or co-creative opportunities (for instance, using ideas or contributions submitted by participants in advance or in the moment)

    Works that interact with data provided by a participant or participants

    Works that react to, or are impacted by the audience 

    Works that use interactive media

    Facilitated interactivity, including works or experiences that are co-created by participants throughout the course of the day (within time constraints)

  • Artists will maintain ownership of their artworks.

  • We’re open to any forms of artistic expression, including, but not limited to musical, dance, and theatrical performances, visual artworks including digital media, sculpture, paintings, textiles, etc.

  • We won’t have permission to mount works onto the walls at the Sheraton, so 2D artworks will be displayed on easels. There are two 7x13 screens and a 8000 Lumen projector, as well as 75" LED HD monitors on rolling stands available that could be used to display digital artworks. There will be a small stage, and a modest A/V setup to support performances. Please see attached images of the event spaces.

    As we only get access to the Sheraton on the day of the event, works must be easily transported and able to be set-up early on the morning of the event.

  • Three main speakers have been selected so far, discussing their own creative processes, and how creativity is applied to their business in the film, marketing, and theatre worlds

  • Yes, by all means. This opportunity is open to all emerging and professional artists and arts organizations.

    Please note, the artist fee range of $3,500 - $10,000 for this event is per project, not per artist, and so a joint submission needs to fit within this budget.

  • Images/videos/audio submitted are one of the most compelling tools we have of communicating artist ideas. This is especially helpful when submitting to a selection committee that is not wholly comprised of artists, as in this case.

    Select images that do the best job of illustrating the work you’re proposing to share, whether it’s recent work, or a sketch of a new idea etc.

    If two artists are working together and combining two very different types of work, and you think each artist needs to submit 5 separate images, in order to thoroughly illustrate your concept that’s fine.

  • Yes, links to video or audio samples are welcome. Please include links to online content in your pdf submission rather than as separate mp4 files etc.

  • Depending on our final budget and timing considerations, we’re hoping to select between 3 and 8 artists to be part of this work.

  • Yes, we are happy to accept proposed project descriptions in alternative formats including audio or video submissions. These recordings should be no longer than three minutes long. All other materials (budget, portfolio, technical requirements, support materials) should be submitted in pdf.

  • Yes.

  • Yes.

  • Our programming for the day is still very flexible, and so we’re asking you to submit ideas and projects that are your best, most resonant ideas for this opportunity. We are not stating max/min timeframes, and will build the program to create an event that fills the day, meets our goals, fits the budget, and showcases a range of artists and artistic media.

  • The following possibilities are currently imagined:

    • All 300 participants sit at round tables and observe a performance.

    • Participants move through several spaces over the course of 30-45-minute blocks and interact with artistic presentation at their own pace.

    Please note, there will be more limited capacity in the schedule for the first format, as audience members will also be seated/stationary during keynote presentations.

  • All set up and tear down will have to take place on the day of the event, before 8:30 am and after 4:30 pm.

  • This event will be open to the general public. We expect attendees to come from a mix of sectors, including tech, marketing, arts, film and tv, architecture and design etc. This work will be geared towards leaders and teams looking to explore the importance of creativity in their work.

  • This event will position artists as professionals use hone and apply creativity to their work, and whom others outside of the arts community can learn from. This event also presents art as an important and varied tool for communication, self-exploration, and creating shared experiences.

  • Each artist-in-residence will be featured in the conference program (online and in print), on social media announcements about the conference, and have a Spotlight on Partnerships story written about them, and be featured in post-event reporting.

    Participating artists-in-residence will receive professional photographs of their participation in the conference to use for their own portfolio/marketing.

The Mental Health and Addictions Centre in St. John’s is scheduled to open in late fall 2024. The vision for the new facility is to be a beacon, a guiding light that resonates with clients, families, staff, and community partners.

In Canada and around the world, integrating visual art experiences within hospital settings is increasingly recognized as a measurable improvement to therapeutic environments, in the context of mental health facilities. NL Health Services plans to include many works of art by artists from our communities in this important new building. 

The Project Team is currently seeking submissions of 2D artworks including drawing, paintings, photographs, and original prints (serigraphy, intaglio, lithography, etc) on archival materials, as well as textiles, encaustic work, or other low-relief artworks that are able to be mounted and framed. In order to submit up to five works between 18” and 48” wide, with a purchase price between $500 and $1,500, artists should register by requesting the full information package and submission form by emailing open.calls@centralhealth.nl.ca.

The process will be as follows: 

  1. Interested artists register for the opportunity by sending an email to: open.calls@centralhealth.nl.ca no later than February 22, 2024 at 4pm, NST. 

  2. Once the February 22 deadline to register has passed, all registered artists will receive the full information package via email and submission instructions via email. 

  3. Registered artists will then have three weeks to submit their artworks for consideration (deadline: March 15, 2024).

Please note, artists who have not registered by the deadline of February 22 at 4pm NST will not be eligible to submit their artworks for consideration.

Business & Arts NL is working on the 2023 edition of our popular Local Holiday Gift Guide, and we want you to be part of it!

The Holiday Gift Guide is an interactive PDF that lets shoppers click on a product image, taking them directly to your product page or website – providing another avenue to showcase your work and reach new audiences. Check out our FAQ below for more information.

Did You Know?

The Holiday Gift Guide isn’t used just during the holiday season, but year-round. Occasionally, members of the business community reach out to us seeking products by local creators for gift ideas, swag bag items, etc. If you sell items that are of a lower price point, that can be reproduced in larger quantities, it’s a great idea to submit those too!


Submission Guidelines

Artists are invited to submit three different items they’d like to have featured in the guide. We recommend choosing three items that are most likely to draw people to your online store or website.

For each item you will need to provide the following:

  1. Product title/name for each item

  2. An image of the product/service

    • Required dimensions 6” (w) by 6.5” (h) at minimum 72ppi or 517px (w) by 560px (h)

    • Images submitted with different proportions will be cropped to this format, which is roughly square

  3. Price (or price range) for each product

  4. A link to the specific product page on your site

Artist Information

  1. Your name or business name

  2. A short description of your business, or of the product/service you’d like featured (140 words max)

  3. Information/website on where to purchase your products/artwork (choose 1)

    • Website of the online store

    • Etsy page or

    • Website of a retailer that carries your products

  4. Social media handles (we use Instagram, Facebook and Twitter)

Quidi Vidi Art Cart

Are you looking to get more eyes on your art/craft and make some sales? We have an exciting opportunity happening at the Quidi Vidi Wharf this summer!

Our team is looking for artists and creative entrepreneurs who are interested in selling their goods at our newly crafted kiosk from July-September. This is a great way to showcase your hard work and talent to our local community and tourists! Interested? Fill out our application form below.

Picturesque Quidi Vidi Village will be THE place to be with a unique summer event featuring ice cream, craft beer, food trucks and of course, our mobile art cart. Hours of operation for the vendors will be from 12pm-7pm daily (with some flexibility). Check out our FAQ below for more information.

The art cart here is displayed with “A Study in Stitches” crochet and knitted pieces. The cart has lots of space for you to display and sell your artworks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide a payment collector or cash register? All artists are responsible for their own sales transactions. If you would like to use Square or another payment system, come with your own electronic device. If you will be accepting cash, make sure to bring lots of change.


Will there be a fee to participate?
The cost to use the booth will be $25 per day.

Will I be selling inside or outside? The artist kiosk will be located outside on the Quidi Vidi wharf.


What if it’s a bad weather day? If it’s raining, the art cart can be moved under the tent and sales can continue there.


Should I bring my own supplies to secure my artwork?
We suggest you bring anything you’d like to help combat the wind. Anything to secure your works such as stones, stands, containers, etc. 


Will everyone who applies be accepted?
If we receive more applications than spots available, our selection committee will make the decision of who will participate in the program.  

Do I need a certificate of insurance? A certificate of insurance would be great. We are currently trying to find a workaround for artists who do not have one.

What about parking? Parking at Quidi Vidi Wharf is limited. Best to come in early to set up your stuff and secure a spot.
